If you have asked yourself “where do downloads go on iPad” after saving a file in Safari, you are not alone. By default, Safari saves downloads to Files > iCloud Drive > Downloads. Here is how to find that folder, locate a downloaded PDF or ZIP, and change the download location to a folder on your iPad.
Where Safari Stores Downloads by Default
When you download a file using Safari on your iPad, the browser saves it to a specific location. The default is Files > iCloud Drive > Downloads. This folder behaves like a regular folder in the Files app. Open it at any time to see all your recent downloads, including PDFs, ZIP files, and other documents.
If you use iCloud Drive, your downloads sync across your Apple devices. A file you download on your iPad also appears on your Mac or iPhone if you are signed into the same iCloud account. If you prefer to keep downloads only on your iPad, change where Safari puts them.
How to Find a Downloaded PDF on IPad
There are two quick ways to locate a downloaded PDF or any other file after you save it in Safari.
Use the Downloads Button in Safari
Open Safari and look at the toolbar. Tap the Downloads button, which looks like a downward arrow inside a circle. A list of your most recent downloads appears. Next to each item there is a magnifier icon. Tap that magnifier, and the Files app opens directly to the folder where that file is stored. This is the fastest way to find a specific file.
Browse to the Downloads Folder in Files
Open the Files app. Tap Browse at the bottom. Under Locations, tap iCloud Drive. Then tap the Downloads folder. All your downloaded files appear here. If you have changed the download location to On My iPad, the path will be On My iPad > Downloads instead.
How to Change the Download Location in Safari
You can tell Safari to save files to a different folder. The setting is found in the system settings, not inside Safari itself.
- Open the Settings app on your iPad.
- In newer versions of iPadOS, tap Apps. If you do not see Apps, go directly to Safari under the list of apps.
- Tap Safari.
- Scroll down to Downloads.
- Tap the current location, such as “iCloud Drive”, and choose a new folder, such as On My iPad.
After you change this setting, all future downloads go to the new location. Files you already downloaded stay where they are.
How to Handle ZIP Files You Downloaded
ZIP files are compressed folders. When you download a ZIP on your iPad, it appears as a single file. To see the contents, expand it.
Open a ZIP File in the Files App
Tap the ZIP file in the Files app. The app automatically expands it into a folder with the same name. Tap into that folder to view the individual files inside. For example, if you convert a multi-page PDF using a tool like PDF to JPG for iPad, the output downloads as a ZIP. Inside you will find images named like original-name-page-001.jpg, original-name-page-002.jpg, and so on.
You do not need a separate app to open ZIP files on iPad. The Files app handles them natively. If you want to keep the expanded files, copy them to another folder or leave them inside the expanded folder.
Using the IPad Download Manager in Safari
Safari on iPad does not have a separate download manager app. Instead, the Downloads button in the toolbar acts as a simple download manager. It shows a list of recent downloads, their progress, and the option to open or locate each file.
- To see all downloads currently in progress, tap the Downloads button while a file is downloading.
- To open a finished download, tap the file name in the list.
- To find a file in the Files app, tap the magnifier icon next to it.
If you need to manage older downloads, browse the Downloads folder in Files. You can delete, move, or rename files there just like any other folder.
What to Do If You Still Cannot Find Your Download
If you have looked in the Downloads folder and the Safari downloads list but still cannot find your file, try these steps.
- Check the folder you set as the custom download location. If you changed it previously, new files go there, not to the default Downloads folder.
- Search the Files app. Tap the search bar at the top of Files and type part of the file name. This searches all locations on your iPad and iCloud Drive.
- Make sure the download finished. In Safari, tap the Downloads button. If the item shows a progress bar that did not complete, the file may not have saved.
- If you downloaded a PDF from a website that opens it in the browser instead of saving it, tap the download icon or use “Save as” options in the PDF viewer.
For users who convert PDFs to iPad-friendly images using a service like pdf-to-ipad-converter.com, the downloaded file will be a ZIP. Follow the steps above to find and open it in Files.
