You can save a webpage as a PDF on an iPad using only Safari and the tools already on the device. Three built-in methods handle this: the Share options, a full-page capture, and the print pinch trick. None require extra apps. Turn on Reader view first to strip ads and sidebars for a cleaner result. Saved PDFs land in the Files app, ready to view or share.

Method 1 Use the Share Sheet to Save as PDF

This is the most direct way to save a webpage as a PDF on an iPad. It works for any page open in Safari.

  1. Tap the Share icon in the top right of the Safari toolbar. It looks like a square with an arrow pointing up.
  2. In the share sheet, tap Options at the top.
  3. From the list of formats, choose PDF.
  4. Tap Save to Files.
  5. Choose a location in the Files app and tap Save.

The resulting PDF contains the entire web page as it appears in Safari, including images, text, and layout. You can also share the PDF directly from the share sheet instead of saving it to Files.

Method 2 Full Page Capture to PDF

Use this when you want the entire page as a single visual file. Unlike a standard capture, it includes content that extends below the screen.

Take the Full Page Capture

On iPads without a Home button, press the top button and the volume up button at the same time. On other iPads, press the top button and the Home button. A thumbnail appears in the bottom left corner.

Convert the Capture to PDF

  1. Tap the thumbnail to open the editing tools.
  2. At the top of the screen, choose Full Page. Safari scrolls through the page and captures everything.
  3. Tap Done.
  4. Choose Save PDF to Files.

This method works when you need a visual copy of the page exactly as it appears, including background colors and images. The saved PDF is a single-page image.

Method 3 the Print Pinch Trick

This method uses the Print function to generate a PDF you can save or share. It is handy when you want to control page size or orientation.

  1. Tap Share in Safari, then tap Print.
  2. On the print preview screen, use two fingers to pinch outward on the page preview. This gesture opens the preview as a PDF document.
  3. From the PDF view, tap the Share icon to send it to another app, or tap the download icon to Save to Files.

This method gives you a clean PDF that is easy to read on other devices. It works well for pages with a print-friendly layout.

When to Use Reader View First

Before using any of the three methods, simplify the page by turning on Reader view. Reader view removes ads, sidebars, navigation menus, and other clutter, leaving only the main article text and images.

To activate Reader view, look for the page menu button in the Safari address bar. It looks like a small rectangle with lines. Tap it, then choose Show Reader. The page reloads in a clean, single-column format.

Use Reader view when you want to save an article for later reading without distractions. It also helps when you want the PDF to contain only the essential content. After Reader view is active, use any of the three methods above to save the page as a PDF.

Not every web page supports Reader view. If the page menu button is grayed out, the page cannot be simplified. In that case, use one of the other methods directly.

How to Find Your Saved PDFs

All PDFs saved using the methods above appear in the Files app on your iPad. Open the Files app, the blue folder icon, and look in the location you chose when saving. By default, Safari saves PDFs to the Downloads folder or to a folder you select.

From the Files app, you can open a PDF, share it via email or messaging apps, move it to a different folder, or delete it. The PDFs are stored locally on your iPad unless you choose to save them to a cloud storage service linked to the Files app.

Which Method Should You Use?

Each method has a best use case:

  • Share Options (Method 1) is the fastest for a standard web page. It preserves the page layout as it appears on screen.
  • Full Page Capture (Method 2) is best when you need the entire page as one image, including parts that require scrolling. The result is a single-page PDF.
  • Print Pinch Trick (Method 3) is useful when you want a print-style PDF that is easy to read on a computer or e-reader.

If you want a clean, ad-free PDF, try Reader view first. If Reader view is not available, the Share method usually gives the best result.
